Advanced Texas Holdem - Why Check-Raising is For Losers

Advanced Texas Holdem - Why Check-Raising is For Losers
It's a confusing advanced Texas Holdem strategy to implement. Read this article now to find out why check raising is for losers, unless your a WPT champion.
I know that advanced Texas holdem poker professionals, WPT champions and the mysterious 'Texas Poker Gods' all tell you to check raise, check and raise, check first and raise later. However, for the most part I advised against this strategy. If you have followed my blog or articles for sometime you'll know this. The bottom line is this:
- When you check, you can only win by one way. That is to have better cards then the other players..
- When you raise, there are two ways you can win. That is to have better cards then the other players.. and the players can fold.
I would much prefer two ways rather than one.
Check raising is for losers. It doesn't work most of the time. It's a weak, wimpy play. It's bred from the poverty mindset of 'I have to save my chips. My precious chips!'. "I can see the flop for free and raise if I hit!". Or the even worse (in my books) overt-trickster mindset 'heehee I'm gonna trick him. Hehe'
You can't save your way to wealth. You can't trick your way into success. Hard work, consistent practice and a never ending desire to learn is what you need.
There is no replacement for a solid aggressive betting strategy. And you can't be aggressive when you are checking all the time. If you had pocket aces, why would you check? If you've hit a flush or have a nice flush draw, why would you check? If you've got a set and have an open ended straight draw, why would you check?
So unless you are so absolutely awesome at your pre-flop reading ability, and without a doubt know that your cards are better than your opponents, and that you will most likely flop a better hand then him, and that he will have a hand that's good enough to bet but still just worse then yours so you take the pot, then I wouldn't bother check-raising.

When Shouldn't You Be Set Mining In Poker?

When Shouldn't You Be Set Mining In Poker?
Set mining is a popular concept in Texas Hold 'Em poker, and refers to the process of calling a pre-flop raise with a low pocket pair (usually 55 and below) with the intention of hitting a set. Beginner poker players tend to abuse this concept way too often and use it to justify poor players on their part. Here are a few common scenarios when you shouldn't be attempting to set mine.
1) Do not set mine when you are in early position.
If you in early position, such as in the small or the big blind, you should not be set mining unless both you and the pre-flop raiser have at least 180+ big blinds. The reason being that if you are out of position, you will stand no chance of throwing your opponent off his hand if you miss your set, thereby restricting your chances of winning to only those situations where you do hit your set. Keep in mind that your opponent isn't signing a contract that says "I pledge to go all-in if you hit a set", which is why it is almost never a good idea to set mine if you and the pre-flop raiser have only one buy-in - you will not be getting paid off in the long run.
2) Do not set mine if your opponent is loose-aggressive.
The reason for this one is that loose aggressive players tend to, as we all know, raise quite often. His pre-flop raise is by no means an indication of what he is holding and he could basically have anything. This means that even if you do hit your set, you are highly unlikely to to get paid off, as he will be folding to most signs of aggression on your part.
3) Do not set mine if you have a tight image at the table.
If your image is tight, everyone is going to fold to your first sign of aggression. That is why tight players usually don't do too well at set mining. This doesn't mean, however, that you should be playing extremely loose and calling every other hand. If you are a beginner who plays the micros, you are absolutely correct to be playing tight. Just keep in mind that if the other players are aware of your image, they aren't going to give you any action once you hit your set.
Hopefully this will have been of some use to you and will have shown you that you shouldn't be insta-calling all pre-flop raises with low pairs - there is much more to set mining than meets the eye. Always thing twice before making a call, take a look at your opponents and at yourself, try to decide whether you are going to get paid if you actually hit your set and whether you have a chance of getting your opponent to fold if you don't hit your set. Do all of the above, and you will see an improvement in your win rate very soon.

What To Do If You Know Absolutely Nothing About Holdem History

What To Do If You Know Absolutely Nothing About Holdem History
No nothing about Holdem history? Any real poker player knows at least a little bit of trivia and history. Come on, read this article now.
In contrast to Texas Holdem fame, little is known about Holdem history and origins. Although knowledge on where the game comes from cannot help you get a Royal Flush, it can certainly be a source of trivia and make for an interesting topic of conversation. If you want to be a promising poker player you definitely need to know this stuff.
Poker is believed to have been around for centuries, dating back to the ancient Persians who played a game called Nas that bears suspiciously similar qualities as Holdem. Scholars and historians also present the possibility of the game coming from the Renaissance period, while there are still those who believe that it was the early French settlers who introduced it to us. knowing this and being able to recite it sounds and looks super-cool at the poker table.
What probably makes it more confusing is the fact that the German word 'pochen' means 'to knock'? Texas legislation has officially claimed the game however, declaring it to have originated in Robston, Texas.
All of the Holdem History reveals its evolution from being obscure and unheard of to a widely publicized game started in the late 1960s when two brothers, Jack and Benny Binion bought the rights to a poker convention from Tom Moore.
Moore has previously tried for two consecutive years to launch the Gambling Fraternity Convention but to no avail. The brothers renamed and repackaged this into what we now know as the World Series of Poker today. This was probably the biggest and most important history changing event in the early days of Holdem
The initiative that started as a publicity aid for their casino, the Binion's horseshoe casino ended up as one of the most anticipated gambling events of the decade. Participants have grown a hundredfold over the years.
Around the same time, a man called Doyle Brunson and Al Alvarez both published books about poker. Brunson's book, Super / System details poker rules and strategy while Alvarez' focused more on the convention itself and its players. These books too are the biggest game changing information powerhouses to this day.
All the books on poker literature helped Texas Holdem on its rise to fame but Doyle Brunson's Super System is still considered the foremost authority on Poker today. These events and books make up some of the most valuable parts of Holdem history today. You should memorize these pieces of information in order to be able to recite them in case somebody asks.

Free Roll Online Poker Tournament Structure and Strategy

Free Roll Online Poker Tournament Structure and Strategy
Freerolls on online poker sites is not exactly a get-rich-quick scheme. In fact you have to love the game and enjoy playing with thousands of players for the chance to win small money and build a bankroll.
The term Free Roll means that some online gaming sites offer an invitation to participate in tournaments online at no cost to you. You can win cash prizes for simply enrolling and playing Free Roll Poker games with other poker players around the world. This invitation though costly to online poker site operators brings in potencial customers in the hope they play money games in the future after they register on their poker sites. But if you have the patience and play for fun without risk then you will love Free Roll Poker Tournaments.
You can learn quickly and not worry about your wallet. I've personally only won a few hundred dollars but it's a great experience and it's made my real money game better. I have better reads on players and know when to bluff without going to extremes. I've read many forum posts saying the opposite concerning making you a better player. This may be true for some, but in my case it has made me a better player. Some players believe that playing freerolls is like being in the land of make believe because there's no money risk. This may be true at the beginning of the tournament but once the risk takers are gone it's fun to play and the game becomes much more serious.
I've played on almost every free roll online poker sites and like to play the non qualifier freerolls. The qualifier freerolls usually involve more than 7000 players and then when you become top 100 you play on a later date with another 7000 players to win a cash purse of maybe between $200.00 and $400.00. Again, you have to love the game and enjoy playing for a long time, sometimes 6 and 7 hours.
Playing freerolls is fun and gives you the opportunity to enjoy the same adrenaline high playing the real thing without costing you a fortune. I've worked in real Casinos most of my life and know what a gambling habit can do to someone. This is why I hope free rolling can substitute the risk of losing money. In fact through free rolling I learned that gambling is a short journey to failure. I play for free and I love it.
Why play freerolls?
Freerolls can speed up the process of learning and understanding the various Poker Games and learning the basics and strategies. If you're patient like me you can build a small bankroll and use your winnings to play real cash games.
It's fun to play the big qualifier games to have a chance to win big purses. Almost every site offers satellites that can get you into larger tournaments with bigger prizes. The odds here are against you more than in the cash freerolls. Generally there are fewer cash positions. And even if you win a seat, you'll have to do really well in the next tournament. You may get lucky and go to the final table. Other have why not you.
Which freerolls should you play?
That's completely up to you. You can play 2 to 4 tournaments at the same time. But, the more you play, the less attention you can give each of the games.
You should enter freerolls that have a lower number of entrants. You're better off playing with 500 entrant than 9000. Qualifiers are also lengthy and not a good way to consume 8 hours just for a chance to play another 9000 entrants for a small cash prize divided by 100 top winners.
You can play $50.00 cash prize freerolls or $500.00 freerolls. I like a small challenge and prefer $500.00 and greater. Although the smaller cash prize freerolls attaract less people and therefor gives you a better chance of building your bankroll.
What's my freeroll style of playing?
Take you poker gaming seriously. Most freerollers play recklessly and spoil the enjoyment of the game. Play as if your playing in a real money tournament and play patiently.
Once the risk takers are all gone the game becomes more challenging and the players take every move more seriously.
Your aim is to play conservatively until the risk takers have all dissappeared. Patience is a virtue in freerolls. Although you can win lots of chips taking silly chances, it will come back and bite you in the ass.
This is my approach using the following steps.
Step #1: Try making your chip lead early
There's plenty of variations to this. Basically, you are trying to get all of your chips into a pot early. Why? Because everyone else is. In some freerolls you might see five or six people pushing on the first hand. Even if you wait out the opening rounds and play solid tight poker, you may be up against players with 10 times the chips you have. When you are dealt AA, and you have 1,400 chips, a player with 20K might call with any two cards and beat you. And you might be up against several players who are prospecting. Your 1400 doesn't scare them. They can afford to play every pot, and you can't.
So when you can't beat them, join them. Push on the first hand, or any early hand, with pretty much any cards. I would avoid pushing with an ace less than A10, since you'll likely be dominated. And hands like 3-5 can probably be tossed as well. Better yet, unless you have a monster (JJ-AA). I would wait until the second hand, when you'll likely have fewer callers and a better shot to win a pot.
The benefit of this? You find out early if you want to devote time to the freeroll. If you can start creating a big stack early, you have a much better chance of cashing. Slow and tight can often be a recipe for getting sucked out on by someone with a much larger stack. If you lose? So what? You haven't lost anything. You've actually gained time and energy to devote to another freeroll.
Once again, I don't recommend this when the freeroll offers better prizes. The poker is likely to be much better.
Strategy #2: Be Conservative when playing
The exact opposite approach can sometimes work in freerolls as well. Since you know nearly everyone else is trying to get lucky, sitting back and waiting for a monster can be a good strategy. Take that uber-aggressiveness and use it against them.
As we discuss, the preflop monster is good, but can get you into trouble against multiple big stacks. The post-flop monster, when you've hit your big hand, is preferable.
Don't sit back and let people bet it for you, though. Bet out against the big stacks. They'll probably call you because they're bored. Or want to get lucky again.
Playing just the top 10 hands is a good idea, perhaps mixing in suited connectors. But don't go prospecting with junk.
The goal here is too build a bankroll through solid play, which doesn't always work. But if you're playing as much for fun as for the result, this can be a good way to play a freeroll.
Strategy #3: Waiting for the good hands.
This could really be strategy #1a. But it's different. Here your goal is to see as many flops as possible before the stacks around you get too big.
This probably means skipping the first hand, and maybe the first several. Once the play calms down, call with any two cards, unless you are up against big raises (greater than 4x the big blind). Once again, the goal is too get lucky and try to build a bankroll. But you are giving yourself perhaps dozens of hands to do so. You'll once again figure out if you can get a big stack early, making it worth your while to play.
If you get past the beginning then:
Freerolls start resembling real cash games once you've gotten rid of a third to half the field. There will still be lots of people playing any cards and playing super aggressive. And big stacks will make outrageous calls. But midlevel stacks and small stacks who have survived the beginning are usually going to play a more traditional style of poker.
Remember this. Time is an investment, like money. If someone has played in a freeroll for several hours, they're not as likely to push their chips in the hopes of getting lucky. They don't want their investment to be for nothing.
But there are still two types of players. Players who want to win, or place very high; and players whop want to cash. Players who want to win don't care if they just cash for a couple of dollars. They only play the freeroll for the top prizes. So their play can still be unpredictable. The players who want to cash will become super tight, so be wary if you see them raising or reraising.
Once you're in the money
If you've cashed, congratulations. Now you should be trying to win. There's very little difference, usually, between like 50th place and 11th place. So you should be playing with the idea of reaching the final table. If you're short stacked, push with a decent hand. Waiting for a few more people isn't worth it in terms of additional money. Get your chips in with the best hand and try to get to the top nine. If you have a big stack, don't necessarily sit on your chips, but don't be complacent either.
Follow these tips, learn poker games and have fun at no cost to you.

Best Way to Play Pocket Pairs

Best Way to Play Pocket Pairs
Pocket pairs are without a doubt are the greatest starting cards, but landing a low are medium pocket pair can be very dangerous to your chip stack and you need to play them very carefully! I would imagine that if any of us poker players landed pocket eights we would be very happy but realistically and statistically they are not as good a hand as we think.
Statistics show that in Texas hold'em poker pairs or better win 55% leaving a high card to win the remaining 45%!! So if your pocket pairs don't make trips on the flop your only going to beat a high card or a lower pair. You really need to hit that third eight as your opponents could be holding two over cards which they could pair on the flop, and further to that they could hit a straight or a flush which you can't if your holding pocket pairs.
There are 2 ways to play medium pocket pairs that will help you make the most of them and hopefully build your chip stack!
1. The first option is to raise the pot and try to force your opponents to fold, the less opposition that see the flop the better as you don't want anyone pairing any over cards, the more people you get to fold the more likely your are to win. This play works best from late position as you can take the blinds from those who limped in, and also if you played this from early position you could get re-raised by those in late position then you really have to some up how strong your medium pockets pairs are!
2. The second option is to limp in by just calling the blind, see the flop and hope you hit trips! This is the option chosen by most. The great thing about this is that if you hit the 3 of a kind no one will know as you just called the blind from the beginning and you could slow play and win a great pot. If your really lucky a pair could land on the board giving you a Full House which should guarantee you the win
The conclusion is be very careful with medium to low pocket pairs as there not as strong as many people think, but played correctly and with a bit of luck can bring you a very healthy chip stack!

How To Utilize Board Texture in Texas Holdem

How To Utilize Board Texture in Texas Holdem
Remember; you're not the only one looking at the board. When looking at board texture in deciding whether to check, bet, raise, or fold, remember that your opponent is looking at the texture of the board, as well. If you raised from early position and the flop comes 789ddd, there's a high likelihood that you're not going to like that flop. Perceptive players will see that texture and be more willing to play back at you with drawing hands like K10o or KdJc than they would if the flop was AAQdd. Recognize when players may not believe your continuation bets or bluffs; you may see that the board is scary and worthy of a bluff, but if your opponent recognizes it as well, you're simply wasting chips.
Bluffable boards. The drier that the board is, the easier a continuation bet bluff will work. Paired boards, like 992 or 773 are wonderful for firing a continuation bet bluff; the board provides your opponent with little chance of improvement, and essentially turns the hand into, "Well, I thought I had the best hand preflop when I raised, so I better bet these tens again..." which can turn a hand like AJ into a profitable bluffing hand against hands like 44 or AQ on those boards. Another easily bluffable board is a high card and two non connecting low cards, like J62 or K84. You only have one big card to dodge in your opponent's hands, which makes it much less likely that they connected with this type of board, aside from a set.
Understanding turn texture. Let's take a hand like AK. You raise in early position and get flatted by the button. You flop broadway; QJ10 rainbow. You bet out, and get raised. You make a large three bet and get called. The turn is a queen, and you bet out. Your opponent shoves all-in for about three times your bet. Based on the texture of the board, your opponent really can't be making this shove without a full house. He raised you on the flop and you three bet. When he calls this then shoves into you on the turn, he can't be doing that with a straight; he thinks your turn bet is indicative of a strong hand still, so he can't think K9 and 98 are good, and he's supposed to be wary with AK, as well. If you call this bet, you're going to be shown 1010/JJ/QJ a large percentage of the time, probably 90-95% of the time. KQ and AK may still fire this shove, but not enough to make calling this bet on this wet board profitable.
Monster on board texture. If the board comes five flush or straightened, be very cautious about attempting to bluff or calling a big bet. If you raised preflop, then bet the flop and turn on a 4568 board, and a 7 comes on the river, the only hand you can really be expected to show up with that hit that river is 99; and if you're bet into, your opponent is going to show you a 9 half the time and a bluff half the time. This is a good bluff by your opponent; the way you played the hand, with the texture of the board as is, there are a scant few hands (really, only 1, unless you bet A9s with a flush draw twice) that give you the big straight. So, they can make a monster bet of double or triple the pot with a bluff or with a big straight, handcuffing you into chopping a lot or losing a monster a few times. Don't fall for that trap!

Starting Hands in Texas Holdem - The Best Starting Hands to the Worst

Starting Hands in Texas Holdem - The Best Starting Hands to the Worst
BEST STARTING HANDS
These are the top ten starting hands you can get in Texas holdem. Lower pocket cards may have more chance of winning once a flop is dealt, so don't think because you have aces that you have won. My biggest mistake was over valuing my hands and not being able to fold pocket aces, kings or queens. Even when there were flush, straight and other draws on the table. This is a list of the top ten starting hands in Texas holdem, starting with the best hand....Pocket Aces, also known as "pocket rockets" and for some random reason "haces" at my local club.
1. Pocket Aces (A,A)
2. Pocket Kings (K,K)
3. Pocket Queens (Q,Q)
4. Ace-King suited (A,Ks)
5. Pocket Jacks (J,J)
6. Ace Queen suited (A,Qs)
7. King-Queen suited (K,Qs)
8. Ace-King (A,K)
9. Ace-Jack suited (A,Js)
10. Pocket Tens (10,10)
Then you have lower pocket pairs such as (9,9) and (8,8), also suited connectors such as (6c,7c) and (4h,5h). I play the above top ten starting hands aggressively in order to stop people limping with lesser cards and out drawing me on the flop, however you must remember to play the player not the cards. For example: If there is a very loose aggressive player at the table who is acting after me, then I might just limp in and allow them to raise. Then I would either simply call to allow him to keep attempting to bluff me off the pot or re- raise to take control of the hand early on. This really depends on which of the hands I'm holding. Heads Up Play in Texas Hold'em Poker

Heads Up Play in Texas Hold'em Poker
Once you get to heads-up play, the game of Hold'em changes. In limit Hold'em, you can make a few big mistakes-sometimes it works in your favor if you appear too loose-but you cannot afford to make very many small ones. Constant small misreads of your opponent are far more likely to end your tournament than an incorrect size bet.
When playing heads-up, the most important factor is to understand your opponent's style. Since you have been playing against them for at least the time together on the final table, you should have a good read on their ability, image and level of play. If they are more skillful than you are, you can negate their advantage by forcing big pots to end the game as quickly as possible. If you are the superior player, take your time by playing smaller pots. Your skill level should win out in the end.
Heads-up essentially comes down to a psychological war of aggression. You should raise aggressively with any hand you play and, more often than not, follow it to the river if you have any part of the board, trying to get in every extra bet possible when you believe you are in front.
In order to win the tournament outright, you must know how to adjust your game. When it is down to just two players, there is no one else to hide behind, since you are paying blinds every hand. If you wait for great starting hands, your stack is going to end up blinded away. It often comes down to AC (any card, not Atlantic City) poker. The chances are that you will see the flop with nearly any hand. The end stages of some tournaments will see the blinds equaling the size of the chip stacks. The exceptions to seeing the flop are a sizable raise from your opponent or an extremely poor starting hand. It sometimes comes down to going all-in blind on every hand and hoping your cards win. This style of play twice made Doyle Brunson a WSOP Main Event winner with 10-2 off suit.
The other defining element to heads-up play is position, which is just as important as the break in pool. Limit heads-up is slightly different than no-limit heads-up, since position plays a lesser-though still important-role in limit. The button traditionally posts the small blind, therefore acting first before the flop, and acting second after the flop. This player has both the opportunity to take the lead in a pot pre-flop and to put pressure on the big blind post-flop.
To control the game heads-up, you want to do the majority of your attacking when you are on the button, and the majority of your defensive poker when you are off it. The comparative size of the blinds to your chip stack plays an important part in your decisions. With huge blinds, you stand a greater chance of risking your entire chip stack in either position. Remember, the button's main advantage is that there are three rounds of betting after the flop, giving you the opportunity to fire chips at your opponent three times, essentially putting most of their stack on the line, even in a limit game.
Though this strategy is the first step to success in heads-up play, a lot depends on your opponent. If you follow the formula of constantly attacking from the button and defending off it, you should quickly find out how your opponent's game contrasts with yours. If you find them using the same strategy, the chances are that you will end up in a long battle of attrition. In this case, with neither of you giving in, the blinds eventually become so huge that winning or losing the tournament comes down to a few big pots.

Two Texas Hold 'Em Strategies for Any Game Format

Two Texas Hold 'Em Strategies for Any Game Format
The game of poker has been around some time now. There are countless poker variations with slight changes in the way the game is played. Texas hold 'em is most popular form of poker at the moment. Although the same rules apply to different forms of poker, each game requires a different strategy.
Texas hold 'em for example has some different sub variations. No limit hold 'em requires a different approach then set limit hold 'em. The same goes for pot limit and mix limit games. Texas hold 'em tournament strategies are also different to cash game formats.
The one concept that remains the same throughout the many different poker variations is:
Fold when you're beat
The core poker actions are still intact no matter what game format you're playing. The one action that most poker players have trouble with is folding. Your objective should be to fold when on the losing end and milk your opponents when you have the nuts (the best possible hand). This may sound easy and simple, but is very difficult to follow for many beginning and even advance players.
The other strategy that remains the same throughout the different forms of poker is:
Limiting the percentage of hands played
Beginning players often plays whatever hands the dealer hands them -- thinking that all hands have a chance at winning. That is fatal mistake. While it is true that 72o (the worst hand in poker) has been known to knock AA upside the head once in a while, but the chances of that happening is slim compare to the number of times that AA will be victorious against 72.
So if you're playing loser hands like 72, you will not doubt be a loser in the long haul. Those two strategies will go with you to whatever form of Texas hold 'em you decide to play. They are the basis for playing winning poker.

This Texas Holdem Poker lesson going to reveal a completely exploitable and amazingly effective loophole in the game of Holdem. So make sure you read this article in full.
Texas Holdem Poker Lesson - The Prelude To The Loophole
Now, first I just want to say that this loophole is completely within the rules, and is not in any way wrong or incorrect to do. However, use it sparingly because if you overuse it or abuse it then it just won't work as well. It can only be done in real cash games, you can't do it online.
Texas Holdem Poker Lesson - The Loophole
This is what the loophole is. Essentially it is a bluff or a semi-bluff but you abuse a rule to make it more effective. When there is a player to the right of you (yes you need to be in position to do this) and you think they have a better hand than you, but you want to win anyway, you do exactly this.
When it comes around to their turn, you take quite a large amount of chips and bet them into the pot. Keep them in a pile and don't smash/wreck them. What will happen is the dealer will stop you because it isn't your turn yet. You are making a bet out of turn. Then you can take your stack back with ease.
Texas Holdem Poker Lesson - How The Loophole Works And Why It's So Effective
Now what will happen is the player before you will think 'holy crap, this guy has a monster and is going to bet this big amount, I'm not playing that' and will generally fold. Now, if you are spot on with your read he will fold. This is because you have presented such a strong image.
To make the loophole even better, if he bets out massively anyway - so he has something good - you now have the option to just call or fold. So if you want to protect yourself you can just fold out. Talk about a free win for nothing.
Before you go on and learn a new Texas Holdem Poker lesson or grab some more free tips, think about how you can start to practice and use this nasty little play that abuses a loophole in Holdem. Imagine using this play to take a pot you wouldn't have otherwise won, and realize that you can now win money in an additional way that you couldn't before because of this helpful article.

5 Winning Tactics to CRUSH Sit & Gos at PokerRoom - Part 2

5 Winning Tactics to CRUSH Sit & Gos at PokerRoom - Part 2
In part 1 of this article, I discuss in detail the top 5 winning tactics that anyone can employ to kill the Sit-n-Gos at ANY online poker room.
This article takes you through an example of exactly how you should be playing Sit-and-Go tournaments, depending on the number of players remaining in the game, in order to optimize your win rate.
At other sites, people are playing to finish "in-the-money". At PokerRoom, they tend to be gunning to win. Capitalize on this by setting traps deep in the game. Allow them to come to you and take all their chips!
Here's a "chart" which demonstrates what your strategy should be at each level of the 10-player Sit-n-Go tournament...
# Players In The Game
10-8 Players:
At this stage in the game, you want to be very tight and very aggressive. Play only premium hands... and do so very aggressively. You should limp-in with weak pocket pairs and suited connectors. If you don't get a lucky flop, fold the hand. Don't chase draws.
8-6 Players:
Now that some players are out, the game is a bit tighter. Odds are there are one or two players that have much more chips than the rest of the table. Avoid these players. Make moves with good cards, but start to bully players without big stacks.
5-4 Players:
Now the play has gotten very aggressive. Players are raising virtually every hand and with bigger blinds, they're doing okay. Wait until you've got a good hand and then come back at players who are buying pots. This will instantly make you the leader and players will no longer attempt to steal your blinds... which will get you into the money!
3 Players:
Now you're in the money... you don't want to mess around and only win a few dollars. Take on a very aggressive stance and loosen up your hand selection. Take complete control of every hand. You don't want to finish 2nd. You're playing to win right here, so don't be scared to take risks.
2 Players:
you've made it to heads-up! This is a tough spot to be in, especially if you don't have many chips. Become more aggressive and looser. If you're a tight player and you don't feel comfortable moving all-in with Ace-high, you'll rapidly get blinded out at this  goal is to hemorrhage your opponent to a level where he's desperate to win a hand and you are able to trap him with something better.
So who cleans up the best?
Usually, the most successful players are those who adhere closely to their game plan. If you remain too tight or get too loose, you are NOT going to win the PokerRoom Sit-n-Go's. If you're an experienced player and can adopt a tight-aggressive style early on... and move slowly toward a loose-aggressive mentality, then you'll be able to win at these games consistently...
Among the great things about the Sit-nGo tournaments is your hand selection and betting are the only two talents that you need to develop in order to win. Your knowledge of traps, pot odds, bluffing, and intimation will HELP... but if you just play the right hands and bet a lot every time you enter a pot, you're going to consistently make it in the money.

Poker is the one thing that a lot of casinos do not like, because it is the one game where the house or the casino does not have an advantage at, in fact poker is the one game that is based upon the skill of the player when it comes to their odds of winning.
When I was a young person and I was living with my Mother and her boyfriend at the time, due to my parents divorce, I used to sit and watch them along with a couple friends who would come by, play poker on the kitchen table on Friday nights. They would always play and bet against each other, wagering change and sometimes miniature bottles of alcohol they purchased from the State Liquor Store. Sometimes the pile of change or 'pot' as it was often called, would grow pretty big during some hands of the cards played.
There are many different variations or games of poker, some of these are; Five card draw, Seven card stud, Texas Holdem, and others. Back a few years ago, I hardly ever heard of Texas holdem, it was always five card draw or seven card stud that was being played, now days the top favorite seems to be Texas Holdem.
Poker has become so popular that it is on television more and more, and every year there are more and more championships, the biggest poker tournament in the world is the World Series of Poker, which is held once a year in Las Vegas, the entrance fee to play is currently $10,000. There are a lot of books on ways to increase your odds and skills at playing poker, and there are even free online tutorials and actual video poker games you can play online for free, to help hone your skills.
Once you become good at beating the online video poker machines, you may have found that you now have a skill that can help you win some money the next time you go to a casino. If you visit casinos once in awhile or on a regular basis, you probably like playing slot machines, and maybe you have even won a few times on these machines. The facts are that slot machines are random and the house, or casino is the one that usually wins the most. If you have polished your skills by learning to play video poker online, the next time you visit a casino, you may wish to skip the slots and head towards a video poker machine, where you skills may just pay off good for you.
During the cold months of winter, when you have nothing to do, why not try improving your skills at playing video poker, it's not just a hobby that can pay off good in time, it's a great hobby to help shake the winter blues.

You can see the flop and you might get a lucky hit. If you don't, just fold, it's fine.

The second tip is that you should always bet a similar about pre-flop. That is, you should make the size of your bet consistent no matter what cards you have. A good amount to bet is three times the big blind.

Learning Texas Holdem Poker - Plan for Success

Learning Texas Holdem Poker - Plan for Success
The world-wide fascination with Texas Holdem poker continues to grow. The success of young poker players at the World Series of Poker has caught the attention of young people around the world. Jonathan Duhamel, a part-time student and professional poker player, became the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion at the age of 22 years winning almost $9 million. Add to this the fact that the top eight players, all of whom were still in their twenties, each won at least a million dollars and you can see why the appeal of Texas Holdem poker has received a huge burst of interest. Duhamel follows in the footsteps of other great young champions, Daniel Neagreanu, Phip Hellmuth, Chris Moneymaker and Peter Eastgate who have risen to superstar status by hitting it big at the World Series of Poker. They are now rich and famous poker celebrities who have inspired great numbers of aspiring poker champions to explore the marvelous world of Texas Holdem poker.
While there are a few poker players who have gained instant wealth and fame, the road to a World Series of Poker, World Poker Tour or a European Poker Tour Championship is a long and potentially expensive, learning process. For the poker neophyte, a basic poker skill development plan must be part of their learning strategy.
The learning process begins by acquiring a solid understanding of the basics of poker. These basics will involve knowledge of the ranking of poker hands, understanding the concepts of betting, checking, raising, re-raising, bluffing and folding. The ability to calculate mathematical odds and probabilities is a great skill to possess. But for many players who are not so blessed, a basic understanding of hand strength is required. Knowing which hands are strong and which hands are weak and the chances of making a hand with the cards that are dealt is an essential skill. Without this minimum basic poker knowledge and skill, poker success at any level will be difficult to accomplish.
Unfortunately, today there is a rush to get it done, just do it! Patience is not a virtue, it is basically non-existent. The biggest mistake that a beginning player can make is to rush off to a casino, a poker room or an online poker room such as PokerStars, Poker Party or Full Tilt poker and start playing for real money. This can be a very costly mistake.
The poker learning and development process should begin by playing poker at home in a low-risk environment with family and friends. Initially, stakes should be restricted to playing for bragging rights or for very low stakes. The poker group should include players who are at the same stage of learning, at least until there is an understanding of all the basic rules and procedures. At these very basic levels, the group of players might even want to share their knowledge to help each other develop their skills more quickly. It is at this level, that they should also begin to acquire a poker library of poker instructional books and DVDs. These instructional resources should provide basic poker instruction plus information on more advanced poker strategy and tactics.
There are many excellent instructional resources available for top poker players and authors who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Top player authors and poker experts include Doyle Brunson, David Sklansky, Pat Harrington, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein and Mike Caro. These individuals have all written highly acclaimed books and/or produced top quality poker instructional DVDs on playing Texas Holdem poker and Texas Holdem Poker Strategies. These instructional materials are valuable resources for poker players over a broad range of skill and experience levels.
When the player has acquired basic poker knowledge, they must then move to the next level of understanding. This includes understanding and utilizing position at the table, determining pre flop odds, pot odds and calculating OUTS. This knowledge will help the player to make better decisions about which cards to play. The positioning of a player at the table has an effect on how the dealt cards should be played. For example, there are table positions and circumstances when an Ace in the hole would require the player to fold, while the same cards, with the player in a different table position, would require a raise. Learning the when and how of making these decisions is a higher level skill that is essential for consistent poker success.
To make the appropriate mathematical decisions at the poker table related to odds and probabilities, a number of aids are available that can assist the player. These aids include charts and calculators that can assist players in acquiring the necessary statistical information. Through consistent use of these learning devices the player will begin to gain an understanding of how to make the right card playing and betting choices. In the early learning stages, beginning players should agree to allow the communal use of these assists. As the players develop a greater understanding or develop their calculation skills, the aids can be phased out or removed completely from use. These charts and calculators or available on line for purchase and at no cost and can be found with a simple search.
Armed with basic knowledge and skills, beginning players are now ready to attempt online play. They should start at online poker sites with play money tables. Here they can continue to use the charts and odds calculators to help in their decision making. The more they play using these aids, the better understanding they will develop. At this stage, they should begin reading more advanced poker instructional resources that will teach how to calculate odds and probabilities, determine the range of cards that a player might be holding, how to spot tells and the other psychological aspects of
When a player has reached this level with their poker play, they have advanced beyond the beginner level. They are now intermediate level players ready to begin playing for small stakes online and can venture into the casinos or poker rooms. Their poker education now takes on a new dimension requiring more advanced strategy and focus. They may not possess the skills necessary to challenge highly skilled players at the poker tables so they should focus on strategies that can somewhat neutralize the advantages that experienced players enjoy. One such strategy is the Big Bet No-Limit Hold'em Strategy. This strategy can be effective in both tournament and cash games. But this is instruction at the intermediate level and the focus of this article has been the beginning player.
As the intermediate poker players continue with their poker education, they must continue to take time to plan before they initiate further action. By setting out a path to follow and goals to meet along the way will help ensure the best chance for success. Remember "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail".

Problematic Hands in Texas Hold'em - AK

Problematic Hands in Texas Hold'em - AK
The most enigmatic hands in Texas Hold`em: AK off suit; AQ off suit; JJ and TT.
When I first started playing poker few years ago, first thing that I have searched on the poker forums was "what hand costs you the most money?" Most of the people responded: A7; 97; KT and I was surprised because from my experience the hands that costs me the most money where AK, AQ, JJ, TT...
AK off suit - This is the most discussed hand in poker, many say that is on of the winning hands.
AK has numerous values:
- AK dominates many hands that players raise and bet with.
- AK has the high card A and can be dominated only by AA and KK
- If you hit the flop with one of the two, A or K you will have top pair, top kicker
- If you did not hit the flop you will always have a minimum of two over cards
Most players when they have AK in hand, they raise on preflop. On a 10 players table in early position this hand can make you lose lots of money. Even if you hit a A or a K on the  not be so sure that you will win! For example last night I was playing a $10 SNG. Second hand of the tournament. I have AK in middle position. I raise 3 blinds and I receive a re-raise from the SB. I call. On the flop T, K, 4. SB raise (hmm...strange I was thinking there is a donkey there). I re-raise then SB go all in and I call. Guess what? My opponent has deuces. What a looser I say. But no...because the last card was 2. Boom! I was out. Well there are many lucky donkeys. But what i want to say is: do not trust very much AK. Is a dangerous hand. Keep an eye on your position and on your opponents style of playing before you make a decision.
Let`s take a look again at AK's weaknesses: with 4 opponents or more your fold equity is almost 0. Even when you hit your hand will be weak, and raising just increases your opponents pot odds, making their postflop calls correct.

How To Learn The Texas Holdem Poker Rules On Flushes Instantly Without Risking Incorrect Information

How To Learn The Texas Holdem Poker Rules On Flushes Instantly Without Risking Incorrect Information
It's important to learn 100% correct Texas Holdem Poker rules. Flush hands can sometimes be tricky to identify the winner. Learn how to do this instantly and correctly, guaranteed. Read this article now.
One common mistake that players make when playing Holdem is to play same suited cards regardless of card ranking. They hang on to their similarly suited cards and look at the third one on the flop and hope that the turn or the river yields a card of the same suit.
Texas Holdem Poker Rules - Flush Mistakes And Rules To Play By
Mistakes like this may cost players their game. They could have had formed other winnable poker hands had they not focused on one particular suited card combination.
One rule to live by in Holdem is to simply stop playing same suited cards for the sake of it. Hands like 3, 4, 5 or anything lower for example, may easily fall victim to higher flushes.
The best move to make is to stay away from them and look for a more winnable hand.
Texas Holdem Poker Rules - Low Flushes And High Card Pairs
The only time when chances for playing low flushes are best are late in a Sit n Go when all but the blinds have folded. If the situation were reversed with 3-4 players still in the game, the chances of winning the pot would just be too slim.
A major problem with playing suited cards is that you may pair up the high card more times than you will get your flush. A good example of this would be when you are in the middle position with K-3 of spades. There are three other players besides you and then the Flop comes to a K-T-5 rainbow.
You may not have a flush here, but you definitely have a high pair. If you use this hand and still get called or raised, you may have to give it up and fold because your kicker isn't that dependable. Some players try to brave this though and end up losing because of it
With these in mind, the best hand a player may go for would be suited cards no lower than 8-7. You most certainly do not want to commit a large amount of chips to a flush draw.
Texas Holdem Poker Rules - Flushes Played Incorrectly Can Be Costly
There are times though when these hands may represent that you are playing an Ace or high pair but you need to have at least 'know' the table you are playing from to make this judgment. Never throw good money after bad.
If you are at a table where large stakes are high, pre-flop or otherwise, don't try to pass of low suited cards. You will likely find yourself sinking more than you care to admit.
The same is true in later stages of a Sit n Go game where the stakes are all in. You may just be wasting your money. If you are playing suited cards, make sure that you have a strong hand that will guarantee at least some measure of success.
Now that you have learned the Texas Holdem Poker rules on flushes, how to identify the winner of a flush hand, and how to play flushes, including errors and mistakes to watch out for, the only thing left to do is to continue on to access more great information on how to win Holdem and profit from this fantastic game.

Poker Skill Development for the Auditory Learner

Poker Skill Development for the Auditory Learner
This is the second in a series of four articles that outline the use of individual Learning Styles to improve Texas Holdem Poker Skills. The initial article "Use Your Individual Learning Style to Develop Your Texas Holdem Poker Skills", we identified the three Learning Styles, Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. In this article, we will focus on the Auditory Learner. If you are serious about improving your Texas Holdem Poker Skills then you will want to be able to learn the game and improve your skills as quickly and effectively as possible. The best way to accomplish this is to ensure that you are using the learning methods and strategies that are most compatible with the way that you learn naturally. The Auditory Learner uses hearing and listening to acquire, process, consolidate and then recall learning.  They learn faster and more effectively information that they have gathered through hearing.
So what is your Learning Style?  Are you an Auditory Learner? If the following statements sound like you then you just might be.

At the poker table you like to carry on a conversation even with players you don't know.

You like to hum or quietly sing a song.

You like to discuss previous hands.

You try to read your opponents by listening to the volume, pitch, etc. of their voices for tells.

When you have made a new purchase that requires assembly, you ask your spouse or other person to read the direction while you do the task.

You like talking to others on the telephone to keep in touch. You can talk on the phone for hours.

You like to listen to a good story-teller or you listen to audio books.

In conversation you use phrases like, I hear you or sounds good to me.

Lectures aren't that bad, you enjoy a good speaker.

You prefer receiving verbal directions to get from point A to Point B.

You remember things better if you verbalize e.g. say a new telephone number out loud.

You talk to the TV in response to what you are watching.

When giving instructions to others, you present the information verbally.

You work best around the house if the stereo, TV or radio are playing, they energize you.

When thinking or problem solving, you verbalize your thoughts, you sometimes mutter to yourself.

This is not a scientific analysis based on years of research, but if you like the sound of these statements and you think that they describe you fairly accurately then you are probably an Auditory Learner. So what works best for you?

When you are reading for information, read out loud. Stop from time to time and give yourself a verbal summary of what you have read. You can also record what you have just read into a cassette or digital recorder allowing you to play back and listen to the information at a later time. This supports brain based learning research regarding transferring information from short-term to long-term memory.

Using a voice recorder has many benefits. By taping important information as you acquire it allows you listen to it whenever you have an opportunity. Frequently hearing and verbalizing the information strengthens the neuron pathways enabling quick and accurate retrieval when it is required.

Read with a friend. After completing a designated amount of information stop and discuss with the friend what you have read.

Again if you are reading for information, use all the information that is available. Verbalize what you are seeing, pictures, graphs, diagrams or other information that will help you understand or remember what you have just read.

Have others read information to you. You can discuss the information with the reader or record the reading for future listening.

Talk with experienced poker players about skills and strategies and any other tips they might be willing to offer. If you can't record the conversation, summarize it on your recorder as soon as possible.

If you are watching videos on poker play, skills or strategies, talk to the screen supporting, analyzing or critiquing what you have seen. By involving higher level thinking skills or getting emotional you will also remember more.  Brain research advocates involving strong emotions in the learning process.

Watch instructional videos with other people and engage them in a discussion about what you are seeing and hearing. You can stop or rewind the video to ensure that you have not missed information while engaged in discussion.

Watch televised poker tournaments and make verbal comments about the play. Verbally support, criticize or analyze the action, you can be the commentator.

When you are playing poker online talk to yourself about how you played the hand or how other players played. Critique your own play verbally.

Another great strategy is to try to teach someone else what you have just learned. If you have a friend or family member also interesting in learning how to play poker or to improve their skills, deal a few hands and share your knowledge with them.

Some cautions about being an Auditory Learner.

You like to talk so be careful what you say at the table, you might be giving away more information than you intended.

Also because you like to talk don't get so involved in the conversation that you lose your focus.

You can be spontaneous and blurt out things without thinking, so be careful.

Being an Auditory Learner you may find loud, sudden or persistent noise at a certain pitch distracting. To combat this at the poker table, you might want to use a head set that filters out or reduces this distraction. Listening to soft, favorite music can also help.  But be aware, listening to music can become distracting. Also be aware that complete silent can also be distracting.

Good players will pick up on things like this and use it to your disadvantage.

As an Auditory Learner, it may seem that there are not a lot of resources for you to use in developing your poker skills. Nobody lectures on poker anymore and audio tapes are a thing of the past. It is important that you take the things that are available and adapt them to your learning style. A Detailed Outline Of All The Texas Hold'Em Rules

A Detailed Outline Of All The Texas Hold'Em Rules
There are a many different variants of poker. The most common variant is Texas Hold'Em. On the surface Texas Hold'Em  looks like a very simple game but there are many rules to it. Read on to learn more.
The game begins when the two players to the dealer ante left. These players are called blinds because they are forced to blindly put money in the pot before they see the cards.
Normally, the player just to the left to the dealer - called the big blind - antes an amount equal to the minimum bet. The player to his left - the small blind - antes half of that.
In a land-based casino, all bets are placed before the player and not in the middle of the table. This is done to better track the amount each player bets.
After the initial antes, the dealer deals two cards face down to each player. For your information, the other cards that are dealt later in the game are community cards that are shared by all players.
After each player receives the two cards that are exclusively his, the first betting round begins. This starts with the player left from the small blind and goes around the table clockwise.
During the betting round, each player can match the bet of the big blind, call, or call a raise if the bet has been raised, or they can raise no matter who has bet what.
If during the whole betting round there has been no increase the big blind can do nothing. If there was an increase, the big blind can call him out, or fold. Similarly, the small blind can choose to call or fold, or if there has been a raise, the small blind can call that raise or re-raise.
Before the dealer deals the community cards they "burn" a card (she drops it down on the table). Now the players are immersed in the next three cards called the "Flop". Now a second betting round follows, starting with the big blind and going clockwise.
Each player may check if there were no bets against him. Or, if someone made a bet before, the player can choose to fold, call the bet or raise.
After this, the dealer burns another card, this one being called the "Turn". This card is added to the flop on the table. Betting occurs as in the previous round, but in some games, the minimum bet doubles on this round. This prevents players playing cheaply and also makes the game a lot more interesting, in my opinion.
Finally, after burning another card, the fifth card - the "River" - is then included in the community cards. The last betting round takes place. If more than one player remains, there is a showdown with each player.
The best five-card hand each player can make from his two cards and the five board cards depicts who will win. These are the Texas Hold'Em Rules.

How to Play Texas Holdem Poker Variant

How to Play Texas Holdem Poker Variant
Poker tournaments are popular on television. Many tournaments televise their final tables and this gives a lot of boast to the popularity of poker. Because of this popularity, many players want to learn the variant being played. It may help you to learn the variant if you know that it is Texas Holdem.
If you want to learn this tournament type of poker card game, we will discuss the basics of Texas Holdem Poker in this article. Along the way, you will understand how you will win while playing this popular poker variant. While we know that you already see the games being played on television, some questions may be behind your head and thus, we will try to answer them in this article.
Texas Holdem is a community card poker variant. In this game, there will be five cards to be dealt in the middle of the board. While each player will have hole cards, individual cards dealt, this will only be two cards and you have to combine your hole cards with the community cards to build the five-card hand. The community cards are five cards dealt in three tranches. The first three cards to be dealt would be the flop, then, one card would be the turn and the fifth card to be dealt in the middle of the board is the river.
Players may use only three of the community cards to combine with their hole cards, or four cards from the board plus one hole card, or use all the five cards on the board if no playable five-card hand will be played with the hole cards. The next difference of the Holdem variant with that of the other poker games is the blind structure.
The blind bets are forced bets set to be placed before the game starts. The small blind is the forced bet to be placed by the player on the left of the dealer. The small blind bets half of the minimum while the big blind bets the minimum. The big blind sits on the left of the small blind.
After the blinds are placed, the dealer will then start to deal the hole cards to each of the players. Just like in any poker variant, the difference of course is that players do not have individual five cards but rather they have only two cards. Thus, the need to combine the hole cards with the community cards.
This is the basic difference of Texas Holdem variant. Finally, playing Texas Holdem will entail some mathematical application because you have to know the odds of winning as compared to settling on making an action, either to bet, raise or fold with only your individual five cards.
You will have to decide when the flop comes to continue with the game or withdraw by folding. This will limit your loses if you think that your hand is not winnable. You may also decide to fold or raise when the turn comes based on the winning probability of your cards. This time, there are six cards at your disposal. Therefore, you can decide if you can go and see the river or fold.
Likewise, you will be able to gage the strength of your opponents hand by the way they decide on betting or raising looking back at the two betting rounds that have passed. The last decision would be after the river is dealt. If you think you have a winnable hand by combining your hole cards with the board, then you can bet or raise but if you think that the strength of your opponents' hands would be greater, then you must fold.
There are several instances in the Texas Holdem Poker variant where you can decide to fold to minimize your losses. Thus, gauging the strength of your opponents' cards, utilizing some mathematical computations and assessing your cards will be important. Luck is not the only things necessary to win in this game, understanding the game play is important and applying some strategies will help you win while playing Texas Holdem Poker.

When to Check Raise in Texas Hold'em Poker

When to Check Raise in Texas Hold'em Poker
In general, when to use a check raise is in a spot where you want to represent a strong hand. If you can represent that big hand and put your opponent to a tough decision that is the main goal that you want to accomplish.
Whether you have that big hand is up for interpretation by your opponent. The main goal of a check raise is for it to be applying pressure. So in limit hold'em you will not apply as much pressure as you would in a game such as no limit, but it does get the point of aggression across.
In a game like limit hold'em you are better off check raising with strong hands rather than making a check raise with weaker hands. The reason being if your opponent is on a straight draw or flush draw, you are giving them great odds to call, and beat your hand.
So in order to properly use this move you will have to be using it to gain value on your hand. In a no limit game or pot limit game you can check raise a much wider range of hands and get your opponent off their hands. But, to generalize the art of the check raise it basically comes down to the application of pressure on your opponent, and to be able to put them out of their comfort level.
To make your opponent make a mistake and to get them stuck in the hand is also something that you want to do when using the check raise. When you can make your opponent very uncomfortable when playing pots with you that is when you can really thrive at the tables at any limit. Branching from that in playing a live game; physically at a table, you will find it easier to pick off your opponents tells. If they are playing and sitting very uncomfortable at the table they will make far and plenty more mistakes.
When they make these mistakes and play uncomfortable you will make a lot more money in the session you are playing, and also in the long run. If you were simply checking and then calling in spots where you could be check raising you would not be making as much money as you could and not returning the most on your money; maximizing your profit.
Also, if you check raise them a few times with nothing, and they fold; not seeing your cards, they will most likely look you up and call your bet with no matter what they have in the pocket the next time that you make that play at them. The check raise gains you a return on equity in the future hands you play with your opponents, and the present hands.
When your opponent is not seeing your cards for an extended period of time because of your aggression they are more prone to call you in spots where they would regularly fold. Those are the spots you want to look for and capitalize on.

However, as with any new gaming technology there will be advantages and disadvantages. Below are some of the positive and negative aspects of mobile casino gambling.
Firstly, the main advantage about a mobile casino is that you do not have to travel anywhere to get to it. The casino can travel with you inside your pocket or bag so you don't have to worry about physically making your way down to a land based casino. You can play a game of mobile poker or roulette anytime of day or night you want to and whenever you feel the urge.
The size of the casino is reduced to that of mobile phone screen which can conveniently fit into your pocket. This is far better than having to lug a bulky laptop and it's accessories around with you just in case you want to play a bit of blackjack.
On the flip side some people may take a bit of time to adapt to the small screens on mobiles phones. They might find it difficult to view the casino games in a very much smaller format than they would if they were in normal online casino. They are also limited to using the mobile phone keypad as the control keys which is a lot smaller in comparison to a computer keyboard. In an online casino they can view the games on a larger monitor and can easily make movements using the mouse. However, these days mobile phone manufacturers are building phones with gaming in mind so they come equipped with larger, clearer screens and more user friendly controls.
When changing from a land based casino to mobile casino you may be tempted to wager a greater amount as the money cannot be seen on the virtual betting tables. This can be a danger as you could end up spending more money than you would in actual casinos since there are no physical chips seen anywhere. Physical chips in live casinos take a person away from thinking they are using real money however, with virtual chips it can feel as if no money is involved at all which can be risky.
